Anyone thinking about trips for this weekend?

Migrating this from the old forum.

Birdseye: I'm available on Sunday? High tide's around 4pm.

Chip: I thought you were going to Martha's Vineyard?

I am going to meet the college buddies for a golf weekend on the cape. No paddling again.

Birdseye: I am going to the Vineyard from Thurs - Sat (should miss the Cape traffic both ways). My wife has to work Sunday. So I figured... I could come home and mow the lawn or I could go paddling.

Pretty easy decision don't you think? :)

Chip: No brainer there.
<hr width="70%" size="1">
Norwaylady: Hi Nelson.

I might be able to do something local Sunday PM.

Sdroberts: I'm available until 12:00, but this isn't condusive to the tides, so go on without me.... don't feel bad... really, it's ok. SAVE YOURSELVES!!!!!

Todd: Currently I'm available Sunday evening. Local would be good.

How about east of Humerock, ocean side, we could head around to Greeen Harbor, tour on in to the harbor, head down to Duxbury Harbor, catch some tasty waves Dude.

I'd rather go mid afternoon but if you've got something going don't hold up on my account.

Sunday PM to coincide with high tide could work for me!

Post by chpaton »

Need to know more details to see if the logistics can work out. Very dependent on the approval of my activity director and if the grandson decides to visit or not!

I'd certainly be willing to do Hingham Harbor (again), or the Back River and environs (Higham - Weymouth Rt 3A Abigale Adams Park). Also up my way if anybody wants to try Dorchester Bay (Thompsons - Spectacle - Long Is) or Quincy Bay (Peddocks, Rainsford Is). Duxbury might be a little bit of a reach depending on what else my activity director has planned.

I just remembered that I'm selling my son's car on Sunday and not sure what time that will happen. If you guys put something together, make sure you post it here. If I can make it I'll be there.

My ulitmate time would be between 1:30 and 4:30 and preferably close to home (but do whatever floats your boat.... hey I just made a funny :D )

Hope to see you on Sunday.

This weekend

Post by Dave »

My wife Allison and I are hoping to get out both days. I have a trip I want to try, we'll put in at the north end of Wollaston, go out and around Moon Island, skirt Thompsons, mabe stop in there. Then we'll shoot accross Dochester Harbor, perhaps have a bite to eat at McCormack Bath House on Malibu Beach, or Sully's out at Castle Island. It is a pretty long trip, and very urban, but I'm thinking it might be fun. I haven't been over to the other side of Squantum yet, so this weekend will be a bit of an exploration. Not sure about times right now, still trying to figure out how I'm going to fit everything in this weekend.

I love the idea of paddling someplace to eat. Generally, we're in the middle of nowhere, and we pb&j it. I think it'd be great fun to pull up someplace and order a pizza. Maybe even a Burger King with a paddle-thru window.

Paddle through Dining

Malibu Beach would be perfect, the dining area is right on the beach, you could carry the kayaks to the edge of the patio, pull up a table and dig in!

A few years

Post by Dave »

It is right accross from the Stadium up by the traffic circle. They completely gutted and renovated the old McCormick bath house about 6 years ago. The old locker rooms covered patios now. One side has a boat livery, the middle is the bathrooms and offices, and the other side has a restaurant. It was called Gerards for a couple years, someone else is running it now. Nothing fancy, no waiters or anything, but it is beautiful spot to scarf down some fried clams and enjoy the harbor, (burgers and such too.) We used to walk over for dinner on nice summer nights before we moved.

Are you sure you're talking about Malibu Beach? Under the draw bridge over by the Savin Hill Yacht Club?

No, I thought that was Savin Hill beach? Well, this is on the old harbor side of Columbia Pt. As you're looking out from the beach, the JFK Library is on you're right, and Castle Island is off to the left.

Actually there might be 2 beaches in that bay, Savin Hill near the yacht club and malibu near Morrissey Blve.

The beach you're thinking of I believe is Carson Beach and the area is City Point.

Bought a chart

Post by Dave »

book last night, I'll start learning the names. It's funny, I lived in that part of town for seven years, I only know it by landmarks, you know? Like, "Over by Sullies." Probably cause those were the kind of directions I always got when I asked the folks who live around there.

I remember paddling around that bay in my blow up boat at around age 12.

It was pretty fun then too.

Steven,

Didn't make it last night, which I'm sure you figured out. I ran into work problems.

All,

It is going to be hot this weekend. I will be out there somewhere, most likely local and on a easy paddle. North River, Spit, Jacob's Pond, Green Harbor, Scituate Harbor. I'm going to practice wet exit, self rescue near the shore while I'm out with my new paddle float.

Bea, want to join me? Is Christina available, Janet?

Hi Todd.

I would love to do something Sunday after lunch. The Spit is high on my list. It would have to me last minute plans though, as I am not to sure how Sunday is shaping up. We have the beach service in the morning, where all the work campers tell about the past week"s experience. Maybe you want to join me?

Bea,

I will try to make it to the beach service, and I will call you if plans work out for Sunday PM. The spit would be good, because I try to hit the Spit around low tide and then catch the tide coming back to the Driftway. How do you experience the Spit and the tide when you go?

We're definitely going to be going out. I need to check with Allison, I think she really wants to go out to Peddocks this weekend. I'm trying to push my South Boston plan. You're good for Sunday, not Saturday, right? Looks like we would have to go out in the morning on Sunday.

Dave:

Given the forecast for 25 knot wind gusts and T storms on Sunday afternoon (Been there, Done that, and don't want to do it again!), I think I might try to convince my activity director to sanction a Saturday PM - all still conditional on the grandson not making a call.

If you decide to go out Saturday let me know where and when and if I can make it I will. I'll do the same if I make definite plans!

Your trip around Dorchester Bay to City Point and back is quite ambitious and I advise waiting for a cooler day. to put it in perspective we did what 10 miles plus last weekend? - if you launch from Squantum YC, stay out of the channel and follow Squantum Neck to Moon Neck and reach the entrance to Dorchester Bay at the Long Is bridge, that in itself is about 4 miles and you still have cross the bay past Thompsons and Spectacle to reach City Point and return! You might want to let your wife work up to that one!

Let me know what's up.

Sounds very reasonable, so I will say right now, we're looking at a Peddocks Island trip in the late morning or early afternoon. I'll let you know when it's finalized.

Have a good one.

Todd, Bea,

I might be interested in a trip to the spit on Sunday Afternoon if the winds don't get too bad.

How does 2pm sound at the Driftway??

An awesomw day!

Post by Dave »

It wasn't that hot out on the water yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised. We went straight out to Peddocks, put in at Portugese Cove, found lots of boaters with coolers and lawn chairs drinking and blasting their boat stereos. Then we paddled over the Rainford Island, put in there, found a lot of boaters with coolers drinking and blasting their stereos. We made a quick shot over to Long Island, and . . . no boaters. Straight shot back from Bass Point on Long Island back to Wollaston accros Quincy Bay, there was a lot of traffic in the channel off the bridge. We crossed the channel right before the fast ferry and had that wake pushing us home for a few minutes, felt like surfing, (I think.) So, I could use a littlt Ben Gay today, but it is a good sore. We had the wind at our backs gong out, and we paddled into it coming back, so it kept us cool, but it was a good work out. No paddling today, but I could use a recovery period. I hope everyone else had some fun paddling this weekend.

Well I never heard back from Todd and Bea about the trip to the Spit so I decided to go on my own. This was only my second time out there (first time was by motor boat about 7 yrs ago). The marine forcast said 12 mph wind and seas of 1-2 ft but I did find that at all. It was a very pleasant paddle with only a few swells after I left the Herring River. As you can probably imagine the Spit was packed. I paddled around the perimiter then back and picked a sandy spot (the last one I think) to land. I walked the Spit while hydrating and even ran into someone I knew. I returned to my boat, had a snack and headed back. The whole trip took about an hour but it was a good time nonetheless.

The Spit on a summer weekend day is like a mini Daytona Beach. People must have to plan to get there WAY early to get a landing spot. Maybe the Spit needs a doorman. "Sorry, you're not on The List. You can't land here. Next time, have a few fabulous babes on the boat or a celebrity."

Fine Woodworking

Post by Dave »

I don't want to start a thread for this, but if any of you get the chance, take a look at the newest Fine Woodworking Magazine. There is a nice little write up of a Connecticutt kayak maker, with some photos of a boat he made that has just been donated to the Museum of Modern art in NYC. Beautiful Boat!!! I'm very worried this new hobby could lead to more carpentry, open up FW and there is a Kayak, and I haven't finished my dining room set yet!
