Wouldn't it be cool to paddle amongst little icebergs without having to travel very far?

It would be even cooler if they all had little polar bears walking on them!

I went out in Woods Hole passage Sunday p.m. Very cool to watch van-sized chunks come down in the current and pile/crunch against each other. At one point all the passage buoys were under water, and they'd pop up pretty spectacularly as an ice flow passed over them. A bunch of buoys have drifted or are outright gone. One of the big channel entrance markers is now right off the NOAA stone pier, a ~1.5 mile trip.

Back in 2004, when we had another real winter around here, some of us went out in our sea yaks on Feb 29th. This is what happened:

If you go out with ice in the water, be careful!

fun fact that I learned recently is that the ice formed when sea water freezes is mostly fresh water. Who knew? How long ago did I take chemistry?

Mark - great story glad it worked out for all of you. Scary too! I'll stick to climbing frozen waterfalls and wait for late April :P
