Tides sent to your cell phone

Post by pat »

This may be of absolutely no value to anyone other than me, but who knows...

There have been many times when I've been away from any internet connection and wanted to know today's tide, or for a future date. Sue is out kayaking with her sister today and I'm at home working (or at least that was the plan). I actually spent some hours developing a web application that will send the tide information to my cell phone. It should work with any cell phone that can receive text messages.

Here's what you do:

Using your cell phone, send a text message to tidestats@ssih.com
In the body of the message include ONLY the date that you're interested in. DAY ONLY. For example, if you want the tide for July 25, the body of the message should be nothing but:

25

If you'd like a day next month, add a '1' after the day, with a space between the two numbers like this:

18 1

(That would return info for August 18.)

It should send it to you. If anyone tries this, let me know. Sue has our cell phone with her, so I can't test it.

Aha - I see what the problem is. Your mail automatically sends several blank lines at the middle. Let me write some code to fix that...

Sue just came home and I tried it from my phone. Works!

Sue has been shopping. She bought herself a wetsuit! What do I have? I'll tell you what. I've got shorts!
