North River---Aug. 3 or 4 (or 6), 2010

Post by Brent »

Anyone interested in paddling the North River on Tuesday Aug. 3, or Wednesday the 4th. Maybe put in around 10:30 and paddle east until low tide (Tue. 12:08 PM, Wed. 12:49) and then paddle back. Starting at the Brooks-Tilden Shipyard on Bridge Street in Marshfield. Either day is good for me. Brent

Brent,
I'm a new member to this site and I've only just got a kayak this spring. I would love to check out the N. River some time with someone who has been down it before.
Are you availabe friday 8/6 or thursday 8/12?

Brent,
I dont get out of work until 0715. By the time I get to Marshfield from the Cape, it would be at least 0830 or so. Normally, I like to go home and get 2-3 hours sleep before heading out, but I guess we are slaves to the tide?
Is this an easy paddle or is it more rigorous? How long does it take?
Whatever time you say, I will be there.

Chris, This should be a fairly easy paddle. We'll go out with the tide and back in with the tide if we get on the water around 1:30 PM or so. The tide will start back in around 2:54. We will put in at the Brooks-Tilden shippyard on Bridge Street. Let me know if this is OK with you. Brent

Brent and Chris,

The North River is a great place to paddle, but be aware of the tides and how high tide/low tide are offset further up a tidal river. Check out the home page on wtpaddlers.org for the tide on the date your interested in. Also, look at the NSRWA.org page for times at specific spots on the river, specifically the page listed below. Enjoy yourselves.

I'll meet you at the shipyard a little after one on friday afternoon. I'll google the shipyard and figure out how to get there.
See you then.

I grew up jumping off the bridge there. I didn't know there was a shipyard up river. Has that always been there?

Actually, it's #28 on NSRWA's map. The Brooks-Tilden Shipyard (1701-1848) is now just a public kayak launch. The road in isn't marked well, but it is just South of the bridge. It's just a small lane down into the woods. There is parking for just a few cars, but it will do. Brent

Everyone,
I highly recommend this trip to anyone (5 hours round trip including beach time). It was a beautiful paddle down the river with the current carrying us along. We ended up finding a beach below the route 3 bridge that quite a few people had pulled their boats up to (someone had even set up a cash only bar). We stopped and had a swim while we waited for the tide to turn in our favor and then began the paddle back. The return trip was a bit more work as the wind was right in our faces, but it was still fairly easy.

Brent said he would post some pictures.

Is that right at the mouth of the river? If so, that's The Spit.

I just checked Google Earth and you are correct that the area is The Spit.
