Is it appropriate to post something like this in the upcoming trips section?

(first I have to make arrangements to pick up my boat etc so this may all be a bit premature ;)

Sounds like an upcoming trip to me. Go for it.

Saturday, Sunday, Monday this weekend - it's all good. I'm sure Kate and I (or just I) will be there at least once, maybe more.

Get there early enough to be in the water before the tide turns (usually 3 hours before high, but recently it was 15-20 minutes earlier than that.) This way you can be warming up as the tide rip starts to build. I still routinely like to do this after five years or so of regular paddling there.

If I get home from Maine in time I would be interested in Cohasset for Monday.

@Mark and NK, I won't have my boat until sometime on Sunday at the earliest so this weekend at the wave for me is out, though I'm still up for heading over to Little Harbor in the long boat on Saturday afternoon ;)

@CGR, I will keep my fingers crossed and let you know when I have my ride :)

Saturday afternoon would be the wave, not Little Harbor. High tide is 5ish, so Little Harbor wouldn't be cranking on the ebb tide until sunset.

But long boats can play in the Cohasset Wave, too!

Thanks for the correction, then perhaps I should try to scramble out to Charlemont early on Saturday then so I can at least sneak in session on Sunday (wheels are turning :P - and still waiting to hear back from Zoar Outdoor).

Lora, you are my hero. But what about that beautiful sea kayak? Will it collect dust?

No way Jan, I still plan to use my long boat as well :) It will be nice to be able to shake things up though.

I had suggested some additional side - hip padding to take up the clearance would help control the boat when edging and bracing.

I think that will do the trick!

Hey Chris.

I love yellow. That seem to be the official Wild Turkey color for 2010!!

Great price on that boat. I think it is too small for me though, as it looks like it is designed for a smaller paddler (80-130 lbs)....if I read the spec correctly?

Bea - I see a weight limit of 165 (with ideal weight for river running 120 - 145)

http://jacksonkayak.com/classic-fun-series/ ** this is the older generation - lora is buying newest version which is a bit shorter **
you can buy one of these new for $799 - but I thought the price wasn't bad with a lendal paddle + skirt & floatation

If the Fun fits you better I may know someone who has the original model for sale cheap.

Sunday :) High tide is at 5:46pm so I will plan to arrive there around 2. That should be enough time to unload and be ready to go early right? I hope you two can make it. I guess there is no need to post in this one in upcoming trips this time ;)

I'll check with Mark (not sure what he might be planning for the weekend), but I suspect we'll both want to join you. Two o'clock will be way early, but do as you please. I'll post yea or nay here after talking with him.

Lora took one of the Boston AMC beginner sessions this past week & weekend; and she did a great job. She was game to try the moves that we had set up; even the five foot seal launch. Several times Lora went over and waited to setup and attempt a roll - awesome!

At the end of yesterday the whole group was tired, but looking great and confident on the water.

We had a great bunch of volunteer instructors and our own CGR was the shinning star! He is a natural teacher and fabulous coach. Thanks for all the words of wisdom, encouragement, and perhaps more importantly the gentle push here and there to get me to try things I didn't think I was ready to do. I have bruises on top of bruises and my new boat has been sufficiently broken in (aka - no longer looks new - lol). What a week! I had a blast and am already looking forward to the next time, though I'm not so sure Kayak Widow is quite as eager as I. It seems waiting around for a bunch of wet stinky boaters is not quite as fun ;)

Thought it's was about time for a quick update.

4th time is the charm

It took me three tries going upside down in my Jackson Fun plus one try in my newly acquired Dagger GT 8.1 (thanks to Gif!) to finally make it through the Zoar Gap right side up for the first time yesterday. It wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination but it counts :)

I think the warm up in my new bigger water boat at the Wave the night before may have helped but Chris's threat of making me repeat the run until I got it right was my real motivation. That boat is heavy so I didn't want to have to carry it out more than once ;)

Thanks AGAIN Chris!

p.s. Now I have my sights set at trying to step it up a bit at the Upper West next weekend (HUGE GRINS).

For the record, that wasn't a threat so much as an opportunity!

Anyway; great job Lora, look how far you have come along in 3 months!

Congratulations Lora!!! Well done. Pretty soon the Deerfield will be too tame for you and you'll be looking for steep creeks and waterfalls to tackle.

I like your new boat. It looks very familiar. I kinda wish I had grabbed it first, but I'm glad you got the good deal and are enjoying it already.

Whoa. Liquid Logic is making some kind of stand-up river board now?

These are not really like the SUP surf paddle boards. A new breed, I guess.

They are plastic and have a wheel so you can tail drag them. I've also seen more of the inflatable boards - NRS is making one now.
