Welcome back, Nelson! (...beach, that is) Saturday, Sep 18

Post by pat »

They've completely re-done Nelson Beach with a boat launch, and I'd like to see how they did.

Arrive at 7:30, launch at 8:00. High tide is at 8:30. Approx 8-9 miles.

Important: If 7:45 rolls around and everyone there is ready to launch, we'll go at that time. If people are still arriving and/or preparing for launch, we'll hang around. I just don't want people scheduling their arrival for 7:58.

Fairly simple trip - Across Plymouth harbor to Long beach, across the channel past Bug Light (boat traffic should be minimal this early) and on to Saquish for an optional leg stretching. Around Clark's Island, across Duxbury bay to Goose Point in Duxbury (another possible landing spot), then back to Nelson Beach.

Projected route:

Sounds good to me! I like beating the traffic. I'll have to try out my hands-free camera equipment this week.

I might try this one. I have to be in Weymouth at 1pm. I'll work on the logistics.

Some serious surf from Igor will be hitting our beaches this weekend, so it'll be good to be in protected waters.

Pat - Is this diagram of the route supposed to be a drawing of a fish with Clark Island as the mouth?

Or is it a diagram of rolling practice and wave riding?

May be opting for more 'open waters' with play time, so I may back out of this one - watching weather/water conditions.

I'd do a trip report, but there's not really a lot to say. Great weather, great paddling conditions (briefly challenging), great company and no scary adventures.

The good news from Nelson Beach is that they did a decent job on the refurbishing. It's easy to get down on the beach, even for non-4-wheel-drive vehicles. The beach at low tide is a hard gravelly consistency, so it's easy to drive on. My only complaint is that they've sort of sealed it off so you can't park on the upper beach area beyond the parking lot, and they didn't create any parking spots for vehicles pulling boat trailers (kinda unusual for a place with a boat ramp).

What do you mean no scary adventures??? I thought Tracy was going to beat me up for the last trip report!!! :D

I've got some pictures that might be worth sharing. Gotta go through them again (1057 of them). That Helmet Hero camera takes a pretty good picture, but is a very wide angle view which was not appropriate for the wide open spaces we were in. Pictures from the other cameras were better but still not many worth posting.

I'll try to do a little trip report in a few days. Gotta work tonight. :(
