Ockway Bay (Popponesset) to Osterville Grand Island - May 12
We haven't done this trip in a while but it usually proves to be interesting, or challenging or exciting depending on the wind and tides. The long range forecast currently looks good for the 12th. I'm posting this early because after Memorial day you can't park on the Cape without a sticker.
High tide on the 12th is 7AM so it will be with us both ways which is good just not sure how low tide is over at Osterville but there's a marina there so it can't be too bad. Total mileage if we go around Osterville Grand Island is about 14 miles but if there's wind, which always seems to show up on the way back, then it could feel a little longer. We'll will make 2 planned stops so bring a lunch, snacks, sunscreen and water.
Be at the parking lot by 8:30 AM and we'll get on the water as soon as we can after that.
We can park at the lot at Ockway Bay on Great Neck Road. The parking area is a little less than a half mile past the Cape Cod Children's Museum (577 Great Neck Road South Mashpee, MA 02649 for your GPS) on the left (Museum is on the right).
The water is still cold so cold weather gear is still needed or at least a decent wetsuit. You should be able to do a self and assisted rescue, be able to paddle 14 miles with wind and have all the usual gear (paddle float, pump, sprayskirt, etc). Please post here if you plan on joining us, please do not just show up at the put in.
Here is a video taken in 2008 of this trip.

I'am in, sounds great. Remember the Sagamore bridge is being worked on expect delays.
Re: Ockway Bay (Popponesset) to Osterville Grand Island - Ma
This looks great... I'm in! Hopefully delays at the bridge won't be too long that time of the day! Thanks for posting!

I'd like to join this trip also.
Re: Ockway Bay (Popponesset) to Osterville Grand Island - Ma
Hi. I'll probably join, but will drop off for a bit at Grand Island and hang in the channel between Grandand Sampson Islands, and meet you again at the second stop. That channel is one of my favorite places on the Cape, and I can't pass it by. It's a personal thing... but if anyone wants to join, they're more than welcome.
I don't think bridge traffic will be much of an issue until the way home - the last several weeks, getting off-Cape has taken between 1 1/2 - 2 hours from Sandwich around the time we'll be done. Taking the Bourne Bridge home will most likely be better for all (including me - I live about 1 mile from the Sagamore Bridge, and I won't be using the Sagamore in the afternoon!).

I'll try to make it, too.
Will the trip go if wind is NNE, 15-20 kts as currently forecast?

Josco,
The Popponesset Bay and OGI sections of the trip shouldn't be too bad with the wind but could get a little sketchy crossing Nantucket Sound. I don't have a problem adjusting the trip a little based on conditions. If things change to 20+ I'll call it but otherwise we'll talk about adjustments when we get there. Let's hope for a decrease.
Everyone should check the site on Friday night and first thing in the AM just in case.

So things look to be shaping up for Saturday. Wind is down to under 10 kts and it looks like it will hit 70 degrees. I'll keep a watch on the wind but I think we're in good shape for Saturday.
Any other takers??
See you all there.

To get back on the subject of the current paddle. Tomorrow is definitely on. Temps in the low 70s (can't wait to put on the dry suit) Wind 6 kts from the SW so we should get a little push across the sound.
See you all in the morning.

Sorry, I stand corrected, wasn't paying attention. Wind is up for tomorrow 10-13 so we'll have a little more of a push than I thought and a potential slog back. Still on.

Bea has put up some pictures on Facebook already. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=414835391882574&set=a.414835288549251.104201.100000683501288&type=1&theater
I've picked out about 30 pictures to add to the trip report and have offered to write the trip report if Nelson wants me to. You'll see something eventually...

Very nice...but I was expecting an historically correct re-enactment of the legendary "Twist Top" incident.
