How to include images in your posted message

Post by pat »

There are two ways to embed a photo in a message you post here on the forum. For those who have done it before, you can still use the method you've used in the past, but with the latest version of the forum software, you aren't required to host your images on another server. Here is how you can accomplish this using each method.

Method #1 - Hosting your images on another server:

You must know the URL of your image that is hosted elsewhere. Then, the simplest thing to do is to click on the "Img" button above where you enter your text, and then paste the URL in between the opening and closing tags, so it looks something like this:

Code: Select all

Method #2 - Uploading your images as an attachment:

If you don't have a server where you can host your images, or if you simply don't know what that means, you can attach an image directly to a post.

First, please resize large images! Most digital cameras take images that are far too wide to fit on a computer monitor. If you simply attach the original image, no one is going to be able to see the entire thing. They'll have to scroll around and see little pieces of it. Most digital cameras come with some form of rudimentary image processing software. Perhaps I'll write a post with options on how to do this. I recommend no larger than about 800px wide.

  • Go to the location in your message where you'd like the image to appear.
  • Now scroll down a little to the "Upload attachment" section.
  • Click on the "Browse" button.
  • Locate the image on your PC. Click on the filename and then click "Open".
(Mac users, sorry if these instructions don't match what you see. I don't have a Mac.)
  • Enter a comment if you want. Totally optional. You can enter comments in your regular text if you prefer.
  • Click "Add the file".
  • Once the file is uploaded, you'll see a new section "Attachments".
  • Click the "Place inline" button to insert your image at the current location.

Any questions, email me.

Where did you run into problems adding more than three?

I tried to post my trip report in the Trip Reports section but after my 3rd image it said I couldn't add more than 3 images. Maybe you can add more because you have admin rights. Or maybe you can only have 3 images inline with the text. It didn't prevent me from uploading but after adding 3 images, all additional images were not available in the inline dropdown.

Personally, I don't like that the inline images have that gray bar across the top, it sort of takes away from the flow of the trip report. Is there anyway that can be removed?

Same thing happened for me, I could only upload three and then there was a message that I'd reached the limit. I just put the rest in the next message.

Hi Pat - I had mentioned in an earlier reply (re: Wellfleet) that I didn't know how to post pictures to the site so I just included the URL for Picassa. I just noticed that you had already addressed this issue in the Forum. Guess I should have read first! Thanks!

Anyway - I think posting the URL worked plus makes it a little easier than attaching a number of pictures...

Okay, Pat. I give up. I entered a URL for my boat, but it was way too big, so removed it. I have the image saved at a better size, but I don't see an 'insert' method within the edit signature section? I'm fairly computer literate, if you could instruct whenever convenient. Thanks!

Sorry, Jan - I just got back from vacation.

To have an image in your signature, you have to have it hosted someplace, like one of the free image storage servers. If you don't have access to one, email it to me and I'll put it on mine. Then, in your signature area, it should look something like this:

Code: Select all
