Re: Procedure for Seasick Paddlers

Doug, despite your lyrical ode to double kayaks, I respectfully decline, wishing to maintain the happy relationship with my husband. My few times in a double (not with Mark) were frustrating to put it mildly. It seems I tend to lean slightly to starboard, and my partner tended to lean slightly to po...

those shoal waves can be fearful, especially in fog. And yes, they can amplify to a huge size as they hit the shallows. I remember the Nova Scotia waves breaking with a sound like dynamite blasts, and spray that could be seen for miles, where offshore it was only about 3-4' swell. sounds like you we...

An excellent suggestion, Norm, that class. And I readily admit to being a poor group participant - I'm so used to paddling alone or with just a few long-time friends. So, I'm going over all this in my head to be a better and less-troublesome participant. no one has bombarded me - yet! - with message...

Thanks for the remedy suggestions. My main point in posting this was to look at how CAM trips can be run most safely, and how we can avoid compounding errors. Procedure for Seasick Paddlers

I have been thinking over the (wonderful!) trip we did Saturday at Sakonnet. One issue that arose with several paddlers was that of sea-sickness. I'm not very happy with how I responded to one paddler who was suffering from this (as was I, but less so), and I'd like to revisit it in light of my deci...

I'd like to join you. I've launched from here numerous times, no parking issues. As Linda says, can be nice surfing off the point - I will have my helmet along! I'm careful around those rocks - the waves can be very big and unexpected when swell is rolling in.

The Floating Islands of Casco Bay

map.jpg On Friday, July 5, with forecasts of shimmering heat, I headed to the mid-section of Casco Bay. Cool water, many islands, driveable day-trip distance, and an area I hadn't explored before - seemed like a perfect choice for a vacation day. I had put out a line to a few friends but no one cou...

Possible Casco Bay Maine Day Trip 7/5 or 7/6

I'm cogitating on a trip to new territory over the holiday, done as a day-trip. I could go either Friday or Saturday, but prefer Friday. I'm thinking of launching from Cousins Island and puttering around the many islands in the area, just to see what's there. I'd be getting an early start from Weymo...

Why do you want a liner? Do you expect to camp in conditions colder than your bag is rated for? That's the only reason I can think of for one (and it'll only buy you 5 or 10 degrees more), unless it's to keep the bag cleaner - but really, are you going to camp THAT often, that a liner would be requi...
