Thursday Night Hingham Paddles

Post by kayakerjnj »

Greetings all,

Daylight is lengthening and the water temps are ever creeping up!

It’s time to schedule our first Thursday Night Paddle.

May 20th, in Hingham. High Tide will be 5:43 PM that evening. These paddles weather permitting will alternate every other Thursday so we can avoid the low tide timing, and utilize the off Thursday for the club's skills sessions.

Please arrive in plenty of time, unloaded and ready to paddle no later than 6:00 PM. Ideally RSVP on the forum so we can get a head count on the PPR (Post Paddle Refreshment).

The water will still be cool so bring your cold water attire and all your safety gear.

As always it’s a fun laid back evening out with the gang.

We'll look forward to meeting the many new members, as we get on the water soon.

Cheers!

I'd really like to go on this, but with so little paddling under my belt this season, I don't want to over-do it two days before I go on the Washburn trip. I think I'll have to catch you next time.

Looks like Kath and I will be no-shows.

I tried a new cooking technique several days ago...I deep fried four toes by spilling some near-smoking point safflower oil on a bare foot.

Yum! A friend thinks I've found a brilliant way to shorten the process of making Peking duck. Lots of nicely plump blisters.

I thought I was good to go on Sunday, so Kath and I paddled Sunday from the beach at Hingham around Bumpkin. We both very much enjoyed being out on the water for the first time this year, but the foot?...not so much.

The water temperature was just over 50 degrees (sigh...if only one could fry at those temperatures!). But it was a lovely day, for sure.

Have fun, all. Hope to see you in another week or two.

Hi all. I just stumbled upon your group while looking for local places to paddle (I live outside Providence). How long are the Hingham trips usually, and where do you all go? Im not sure if I can make it but I'd like to try. I have a 16.5' Necky Elaho, and have just gotten back into "sea" kayaking since moving to the area last year. Previously lived away from the shore without a boat, and stuck to flatwater anywhere I could rent. Im pretty solid on my braces, though I could use some practice with high braces, and definitely with rolling, which I keep putting off waiting for warmer waters. Also, if anyone lives closer to Providence than Boston, I would love to find someone to go paddling with (which would do wonders with my wife's peace of mind) :)

I didn't see much in the upcoming paddles. If Im unable to make it on 5/20, are there any other outings coming up?

Thanks! Look forward to future paddles.

Greetings and Welcome CJ,

Thursday nights are low key 5-7 miles around the Hingham Harbor (out and around 1 or 2 of the islands there).

We'll look forward to seeing you on a trip soon.

Cheers!

We tend not to plan far in advance, but to post a few days to a week ahead of time when weather can be factored in. There are trips on the Cape, and sometimes to RI, so I think you'll find some that will work for you.

Why not be pro-active and post a trip that suits you, see who is interested in joining you?

And welcome to the Turkeys!

Not to drive you away from the Turkeys, who are a fine bunch, but check out RICKA (Rhode Island Canoe Kayak Association) (ricka.org) as well. They're pretty active down your way.

I stopped by Hingham on my way home from Cohasset tonite.

It was like the first day of school - 3 paddlers with shiny new yellow boats to show off, a couple of red vintage boats, and Laura's stealth boat. And also two punks in surfskis.

Wish I could have been there last night...was thinking of you guys as I was standing around for 4 hours waiting for my son to perform in his 2 races for a grand total of about 90 seconds.

How many showed up? From what I can derive from pictures and responses, looks like you had more than 10?

And I nearly made it but had a call that my new paddle (Epic Mid Wing, Burgandy Shaft) had arrived and by the time I got it it was too late to get to Hingham. It's just too nice to use! Now my boat needs a new engine to go with it!

Looks like I missed a great evening - see you next time.

Cheers, Bev.

Hi everyone,

I'm Craig...new to WTP. I bought an Old Town Voyager this year (11' 1") and I have taken it out a few times on Lake Massapoag in Sharon (where I live), but I would be interested in going out on Hingham Harbor with you all. I have paddled about 7 times in my life on pretty call water - the lake, Charles River at Allston, and the Swan River in Dennisport. Is the water in Hingham Harbor calm or is there some chop to it?

Hope to join you all soon,

Craig

Welcome Craig,

It all depends on the wind and boat traffic.

Come to our skills sessions and learn how to be prepared and safe in the ocean in your new vessel. You'll have a lot of fun too.

Cheers

Hi Craig,

The water in Hingham harbor can be almost anything, but some chop is fairly common. Around the inner harbor, in the areas of Button, Sarah, Ragged and Langlee Islands, it's fairly safe. Boat traffic is slow. But once you go beyond that to Bumpkin, Slate and Grape, it gets a little more wide open, and you start to hit the wake of the faster boats out in the open harbor area.

I've sometimes thought of starting a recreational Hingham paddle that would stick more to the inner harbor and World's End area, but I don't know how much response there'd be.

However, I do plan on putting together a recreational trip for early June. If you've signed up on the recreational mailing list, expect an email on this early this coming week.

Hi there,

Thanks for responding. I could check out the skills sessions for sure. Is there a place I could let my two puppies hang out during those skills sessions? I bring my dogs to work and I would be coming to the sessions straight from work.

Thanks!

Hi Pat,

THanks for the info. I did sign up for the emails, so I'll keep an eye out. I would definitely be up for a recreational Hingham paddle. My schedule is all sorts of nutty but I would try to make it.
