Safety patrol for the Great River Race

Post by Doug »

Greetings from Alaska.

I'll miss the Great River Race this year and wondered if there are a few folks that would like to organize the volunteer paddling safety patrol and if there are folks that would like to be apart of that volunteer safety patrol. There will be a motorized sweep boat as usual and Paula at the NSRWA office would be the point person to talk to.

We sure have appreciated everyone's help in the past. The Turkey's have been the backbone of this safety patrol in recent years.

Thanks, Doug

Hi Doug,

I'd be happy to help out this year, but I have to work that morning, but can get to the race by 10:30 AM or so.

Cheers,

I'm in. Chip and Ron are both out of net range, but I'm 99% sure they're in, too.

The Turkey's are the best! Let me know what your plan is when you know.

I haven't been paddling much in years but if there is anything I can do I'd love to help. I've got a Wilderness Systems Pamlico 120. Let me know if I can do anything.

It would be good to have 8 experienced safety boaters to cover the river. I think we have 5 definites and a few maybes. Can everyone chime in if you can help?
We have Pat, Chip, Jordan, Nelson and Ron as definites.

Pat, can you ask Paula if they have other non-turkey vounteers. They usually have a few.

So far it's just us and a sweep boat.

Hopefully, Paula can get a few more volunteers. I know there is always a few non-turkeys patroling.

Honorable mention should also to go recent Turkey inductee Aimee who came all the way down from Lexington to help out with the safety boat duties. She said she'd be bringing crackers and cheese. Now for most of us, that means a box of Ritz, a block of Cracker Barrel, and a plastic knife.

Now since this forum doesn't have a large enough font to do justice to what she brought, I had to make my own:

Aimee brought:

Image

It started modestly enough. She pulled out a couple bags of chips.
Then she pulled out two boxes of quality crackers and a platter with hummus with some excellent cheese that had a French name I can't pronounce.
Then she pulled out chips and salsa.
Then she pulled out a tray of various meats and cheeses.
Then some pretzel/cheese sandwich cracker thingies.
Then she pulled out a log of mozzarella and prosciutto (yes, I had to look up the spelling on that one) and sliced it up for us.
We were all pretty staggered by this spread, but it just kept coming.
She pulled out a gallon of home-made cut-up fruit.
Then mixed nuts.
Then a selection of bottled beverages that appeared to be distant cousins of beer.
I know there were other things, but I simply can't remember them all.

It was the most amazing thing I've seen since that time Jordan got out of his boat to stretch his legs once.

Needless to say, we're inviting her to everything we do from now on.

After all that PPR, we were totally R'ed.
And some of us had to P.

Safety patrol for the Great River Race

Thank you all for helping with the race! It was a great success with a total of 94 boats. FYI The man that had the medical problem is just fine.

Thanks to all of the volunteers. Ron, Pat, Nelson, Jordan, Karen and Aimee. This has been a yearly activity for us for about 5 years. We make up the majority of the safety boaters. Hopefully in the future, we can get more people involved.
