Itty-bitty bottles (for first aid kit)

Post by pat »

I'm putting together a first aid kit for my kayak. Some of the components will be pills of various types, and I'd like to get some individual containers for them. I was hoping I'd find some sample sizes at WalMart, but it seems the only thing they've got in tiny sizes are tubes of personal hygiene stuff like toothpaste and shampoo.

Can anyone suggest where I can find some tiny bottles?

If you can find them still, 35 mm film canisters are watertight. I keep rubber gloves in them

Nalgene makes little bottles that would work. I would suggest little bags over little jars, as this will take up less room. I'm sure you have a lot of little baggies lying around??

I heard the film canisters are not good for food grade items. chemical leaching from the film or something.

Of course!

For now, I've got several items in those little zip-lock snack bags and the bunch of them crammed into a single pill bottle.

If you get desperate you can go to your local REI.

I use "EZY DOSE" pill pouches, small zip-lock bags made especially for pills. They have an area for writing on the bag and I usually write what pill it is along with dose instructions and expiration date. They take up a lot less space than individual bottles. I keep the pouches with the first aid kit in a waterproof box.

Pat,

I can't remember where I bought them, but if you google "EZY Dose Pill Pouch" you can get them online (drugstore.com has them but probably not worth paying shipping unless you are getting others things) I may have, in one of my very infrequent stops at a Wal-mart, gotten them there in the drug section.

YES! I've noticed them disappearing from the shelves, too, the single dose 'packets' seem to be replacing them. I really liked the 35mm container idea... a bit larger than I'd be looking for but would work. THANKS! Although, 35mm containers may be on the verge of disappearing soon, too!

Check out the army/navy surplus store on 3A in plymouth near Cordage Park. They had several small watertight containers when I was there last year. The store dosen't look like much from the front but they have a lot of stuff and its quite large inside.

Skip, I'm not familiar with that place. Is it south of Cordage, in that stretch of stores in North Plymouth?

It's across the street from Cumberland Farms (if that is still a cumbys) north of Cordage Park.

May want to try go into EMS in Hingham. Look in the backbacking section. You should find little plastic water tight bottles of various sizes. They also sell a "bottle kit" for under 10 bucks, though you can buy just the size and style you are looking for.

First aid kits are one of those very important things to bring every time we travel or just go out for an outing like fishing or kayaking. Pills are very water-sensitive so they must be put to tightly capped bottles. Chip knows where to buy those tiny bottles and I think I know that place too.

Hi Pat,

The containers that blood glucose test strips come in might fit your purpose. They're smaller than 35 mm film canisters. Because they have a hinged lid it wouldn't be as easy to lose as a lid that comes off. I have a couple you can have if you're interested.

Pat,

I don't know if you found a solution, but I have an endless supply of bottles for you if you are interested. They won't cost you anything. They are glass with airtight rubber stoppers. I can get a couple of different sizes, with the smallest being about 1 1/2 inches tall x 7/8ths of an inch in diameter. I don't know if this will work for you, but I would be more than happy to get a couple to you if you could still use them.

Thanks, Tracey. Ron gave me a handful of tiny zip-lock bags that have been working pretty well for me. They squish down nicely when packed.
