Charles River Foliage Turning Yet?

Post by norm »

Have the trees started turning in the Medfield, Dover, Natick area yet? I'm thinking of planning a Charles River trip for this weekend, October 2 or 3. I know it might be better waiting another week, but I'm on-call for work that weekend. Also, how are the water levels?

Not much yet. I'd give it a couple of more weeks, especially with the warm rain we've had.

Hi Norm!

I just paddled yesterday on a portion of the Charles River in Dover. It was beautiful and I must have seen a hundred painted box turtles.....but only a few Swamp Maples had turned red. I would guess that in several weeks, it will be gorgeous. The water levels were fine in that section. I did another paddle, several weeks ago, on the Charles in Needham (put in at the new Charles River Canoe and Kayak location) and the water was so low that we had to portage several times! Water level seems fine, on the Charles, up in the Newton area.

Let me know if you're heading up this way....I'm always out on the Charles!

Best, Aimee

Thanks for the foliage report and advice. I was thinking of doing a Charles River trip this weekend because I have to work next weekend. But since two of you say it's too early, I guess I'll wait two weeks.

Not to steal anyone's thunder, but would anyone else be interested in a group paddle down the Charles one of these upcoming weekends?

Hi Norm, I would feel real
comfortable with you at
the helm of a trip on
the upper Charles.
Perhaps next weekend
i have a delivery to
make Sat. morning,
or the weekend after that.
