Thursday Night Hingham Paddles - Continued

Post by kayakerjnj »

Greetings All,

The weather is looking perfect for a night on the water this coming Thursday.

Please post your plans to join the group on Thursdays, and whether you're planning to join us for PPR afterwards at STARS following the paddle. We'll do our best to make reservations and accommodate everyone who wants to join in.

This week and for the coming Thursday's at Hingham, please plan arrive and be ready to launch at 6:00.

The other regulars, Pat, Chip, Ron, Norm, and maybe even Nelson (if we can pry him away from his Sailboat this season for a night or two) will likely be the go to people for Thursday nights for the summer. I'll be heading into see Rudy Wells to get a tune up, so while I'm getting rebuilt, take advantage of the best time of the year to paddle.

Paddle early, paddle often, paddle safe and have a great time.

See you all on the water as soon I can.
Paddle with a big smile, its contagious 8)

I'm going to repeat this again in this thread. It would be nice if some recreational paddlers would join the Thursday night paddle in Hingham. The outer harbor requires a spray skirt and some experience in mildly choppy water and hopefully some rescue skills, but the inner harbor offers a wide array of interesting places to paddle in relatively calm waters. "Signing up" in these threads is never a requirement for the Thursday paddles, but if you do let us know you're coming, I'm sure that at least one of the experienced paddlers will be glad to give you the guided tour of the inner harbor.

I think it would be tremendous if a core group of recreational paddlers would become regulars at this bi-weekly event.

Afternoon,

I missed the skills session last week in Hanson and would love to join you in Hingham but am unsure due to not being in a kayak as yet.
I hope to take it out today to practice getting in and out and probably will take a ride if all goes well.
My work schedule has been busy but should soon be winding down for the summer.
Would love to ride the Hingham Harbor and it's surroundings but I don't have a skirt yet and I'm not sure what type to purchase......

I know you guys think I'm out of the picture but I'll be there one of these Thursdays. It's a little hard to get it back in the routine.

You might find that the cockpit on the Pelican 100 is too large for a skirt. Chip would be able to answer that one. However, a sprayskirt shouldn't stop you from paddling on Thursdays. The water in the inner harbor tends to be fairly flat. Like all paddling places, everything depends on the weather. I've been out in open ocean when there was barely a ripple and I've been on ponds that had one-foot waves. A strong wind can change anything. But on many of these calm sultry summer evenings, Hingham harbor is a very calm place to paddle.

Hi Donna,
I agree with Pat. You probably don't want to be paddling where you will need a skirt for a while anyway. If you haven't been in your boat yet, you want to make sure the conditions are benign which Hingham often is.

Just got back from my first kayak "trip" so to speak. I've got to say I surprised myself.
I think I did quite well for the first time. I do think my paddle is too short though, and maybe
the boat isn't as big as I thought....
I went to Whitmans Pond in Weymouth. My sister told me about a spot with easy
access. Spent about an hour playing around.
Getting in was harder for me than getting out... .
I would like to paddle around the inner Hingham Harbor tomorrow night

Hi, everyone ... would love to be there tomorrow, but my trip to Canada is on Friday morning and I have not even packed (that's what I'll be doing while you're enjoying the water). Have made plans for Saguenay Fjord while there and Acadia paddling on my way home. Hope to see you in Hingham in a couple of weeks! Pam

I'm definitely in for the paddle and will try for Stars. (Depends on the time)
Looking forward to the evening with everyone. The weather should make it quite enjoyable.

Jordan.

I just want to say thank you for all of your help and your patience with me on the water.
You will be missed. Good luck to you tomorrow. Stick to the PT and maybe we can get in a trip
to Scituate for the end of the season.

I'm going to try to make it for paddling tonight If I can get a co-worker to cover my responsibilities this evening. I will not be going to Stars after.

Jordan - best of wishes for a successful procedure and quick recovery.

Ah, you will love the Saguenay. Kayaker's dream. So many whales! I camped at Paradis Marin near Les Escoumins and could watch the whales on the St. Lawrence from my campsite. Easy kayak launch there too. Belugas hang out on the Saguenay at St. Marguerite (I think I've got that right). And of course Acadia is always splendid.

Have a wonderful trip!

Oh sure...here I was at least hoping to sneak away this evening. And then I check the weather sites....

The advisories are already up. Could be rather sporty out there.

Donna, it's difficult to say. We might all wind up doing the recreational trip - staying in the inner harbor. But there have been many times that the storm has come and gone, and then there's very calm weather behind it. I plan on going, but we might wind up sitting in our cars watching the rain till we get sick of it and then just walk across the street for a beer.

No one will blame you for waiting for a better week, though.

All of you that decided not to go to Hingham tonight made the right choice! (Unless you really just wanted dinner at Stars.)

I was in the Hingham parking lot at about 4:30. Water looked beautiful. I took a quick snapshot of how calm it was before the storm - 5:00pm.

Weather on the Blackberry looked like the storm squall might not arrive for an hour or so. I decided I'd gear up and go out for a quick paddle while it was still nice and plan to swing back at 6:00 when others planned to arrive. Just as I was ready to launch, Tracey arrived so I drafted her to join me for my silly plan. As we both got into our boats facing south, it still seemed nice out but we could hear rumblings in the distance. A man on the beach, with 2 little kids swimming, yelled to us we better no go too far. We turned to look north and could see what he was talking about - lightning strikes off in the distance and very nasty storm clouds headed our way. We realized we were not going anywhere and got back out of the water and packed our gear. Just as we got everything all strapped down, it started pouring rain. I tried to take pictures of the storm clouds but did not get any good shots because I was hurrying to finish loading my gear back into the truck.

Here is what it looked like as it started to rain at about 5:41pm.

Chip had arrived and said Ron and Pat were coming. Chip headed over to Stars to get a table. Tracey and I ran into Ron arriving and all joined Chip at Stars. Pat saw where we were but couldn't find a close-by parking space and decided not to join us.

As we took our time having dinner, the storm never really let up. I'm glad we didn't get far from shore before deciding to turn back.

Tracey - thanks for showing up when you did or I might have been stuck furiously paddling back from the far side of the harbor in a lightning storm!

Tracey and I were joking about the Ten Commandments. The sky was creepy. The wind gust almost blew her boat of her car. On the plus side, with the wind whipping around and sandblasting my legs, I won't have to wax this weekend.
