Thursday - Paddling Hingham and Other Locations

Post by kayakerjnj »

Since our state is still on lockdown until May 15, we can now think about a date beyond that for Thursday nights.

Please look for our after work paddles to start on May 28th.

Obviously, this is subject to the ever changing conditions in the state, but I'd rather plan something to look forward to than not.

The weather will eventually be warming up, and could change quickly as it often does. Suggest everyone take this opportunity to refine your boat carrying gear, tie-downs, and do some pres-season maintenance on your vessels. UV Protection on your hatches will make them seal better, and allow you to remove and replace them a lot easier. They are typically expensive, so protect your investments.

Outfitting: Almost everyone needs or should do some refinement so you fit your boat better, and or more comfortably. As our paddling evolves so does our outfitting refinements. Making good / proper boat contact is essential for bracing and rolling.

For anyone who wishes to do some outfitting, I would be happy to help, whether its foaming hip pads or helping you patch some fiberglass and or other typical maintenance items. Please either reply or private message me.

This craziness will eventually end, let's be ready to seize the day when it does.

Hingham has been our default location, but please post other places that are of interest, and we'll go where the interest is.

Stay well everyone!

Jordan,
Humm, lockdown? I think we are urged and suggested. I personally think kayaking is the perfect social distancer. However I am not sure whether the beach landing is open in Hingham. The state definitely doesn't want people congregating. Social distancing is the key and being outdoors with sun and wind is its' own safety.
However, with that said. I thanks for getting us organized cause I am looking forward to paddling and seeing everyone from 6 ft. ;)

I need to get out for a little while, so, I will go check out Hingham harbor boat ramp to see if it is at least open. So when we do get a chance to go kayaking we know it is open. I agree with Romaine kayaking is the perfect social distancer. I assume you all heard Sun light kills the virus.

Is anyone in a position to check the Charles River Parking lot? It is almost time for a spring Charles flotilla.

Ken - I might want to take a ride in the car tomorrow and take a look at the Charles River parking lot. I haven't used any appreciable amount of gas in my car for weeks now. Might be nice to get out further than 2 miles from the house for a change. Wish I could take a bike ride there but my rear derailleur shifting cable just broke on me today and left me stuck in the top rear gear getting back to my car. Front 3 gears still worked so it wasn't too bad. Anybody know if bike shops are essential services? Ordering stuff online takes forever to get delivery these days.

Looking forward to getting on the water. Tired of just looking at the ponds I ride around in the local park.

Ah the annual Charles River spring regatta! Good idea! A lot of the parking lots are closed to try and keep people from congregating. There seems to be this thing that cars are parked too close to each other (like it will cause them to get covid - who knew). That area use to be a very popular with ethnic family BBQ gatherings, so I am sure that Mayor Walsh would not like that with the covid rates so high in Boston. So my guess is that those parking lots might be closed but we might be able to find another put in spot - let me think about it - a place we can launch boats and park on the street.. . . . RR

Yesterday four of us launched from Houghs Neck, because Hull was supposedly ticketing any non-residents and closed off parking by the High School. Turns out the place was hopping, the ice cream shop mobbed and parking was jammed. So much for town ordinances.

We did manage to catch a great boat wake surf at the Gut! Always makes puts a smile on this face :)

Stay healthy everyone!

Yesterday 4/27/2020 Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs published the official guide to using boat ramps and waterways.
Apparently i don't know how to attach a .pdf.

From: Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs
Date: April 27, 2020
Subject: Boating and various other marine and inland waterway related activities
The following are guidelines for boating and various other marine and inland waterway related activities during the duration of Governor Baker’s stay-at-home advisory and essential services order.
Inland boat ramps and canoe launches:
• Inland boat ramps and canoe launches within state parks, forests, wildlife management areas, boating access facilities and other state owned properties managed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts remain open for use by boats being launched by vehicles registered in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, except where the access has already been closed due to parking restrictions or other restrictions.
• All other inland boat ramps that are currently managed by municipalities remain open subject to the discretion of the city or town.
User Guidelines:
o Ramps remain open subject to available parking. A ramp will be considered closed if all parking is full. Illegally parked cars will be ticketed and may be towed.
o All boat ramp and canoe launch users shall practice social distancing. Users should allow appropriate space for users of the boat ramp or launch and clear the ramp when users launch is complete.
o Users should ensure they are ready to depart quickly from the ramp or dock as soon as their boat is put into the water. Users not actively launching their boat should clear the launch area.
o Upon return to ramp, users should load their boat as quickly as safely possible and then clear the launch area.
o Use of ramps for organized fishing tournaments, derbies, or any other type of gathering is prohibited.
o Loitering on ramps or use of ramps for any activity other than launching boats is
prohibited. Parking at ramps for activities other than launching boats is
prohibited.
o Masks or face-coverings should be worn in public in accordance with the
Department of Public Health’s advisory when social distancing is not possible.
Coastal Boat Ramps:
• For commercial, state and municipal uses, coastal boat ramps will remain open.
• For recreational use, coastal boat ramps managed by the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts remain open for use by boats being launched by vehicles registered in the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
• All other coastal boat ramps currently managed by municipalities remain open for
recreational use subject to the discretion of the city or town.
User Guidelines:
o Coastal boat ramp parking lots are open for users launching boats, canoes and
kayaks, and associated parking. Parking for the purpose of accessing coastal
beaches is prohibited.
o All boat ramp and canoe launch users shall practice social distancing. Users
should allow appropriate space for users of the boat ramp or launch and clear the
ramp immediately when their launch is complete.
o Users should ensure they are ready to depart quickly from the ramp or dock as
soon as their boat is put into the water. Users not actively launching their boat
should clear the launch area.
o Upon return to ramp, users should load their boat as quickly as safely possible and
then clear the launch area.
o Use of ramps for organized fishing tournaments, derbies, or any other type of
gathering is prohibited.
o Loitering on ramps or use of ramps for any activity other than launching boats is
prohibited. Parking at ramps for activities other than launching boats is
prohibited.
o Masks or face-coverings should be worn in public in accordance with the
Department of Public Health’s advisory when social distancing is not possible.
Recreational boating:
• The safe operation of recreational boats is permitted under the following guidelines:
o Only persons from the same household should be together on a boat at one time.
o No gathering or groups of persons from multiple households will be permitted on
boat ramps, docks, piers etc., and all users shall practice strict social distancing.
o All recreational crafts shall remain a safe distance apart. Tying boats or other
crafts together is prohibited.
o All recreational boating is subject to the discretion of local officials,
harbormasters, and law enforcement.
o All local rules, regulations, laws and Coast Guard requirements still apply.

Boo Hoo. Raining today. The state allows/encourages the use of boat ramps so long as social distancing is done and not congregating at the ramp. So anyhow. I may go before May 27. Romaine

Looks like it'll be windy mid-days this weekend. Maybe an inland river trip would be nice? I imagine the upper Charles and Sudbury Rivers are full of water these days? For me, I'll probably go biking instead of paddling this weekend since I got my bike fixed but my good kayak still needs repair.
