I'm planning on being there too but don't think I'm staying for PPR.

Haven't heard from Jordan in a while. Is he around? Are you coming tonight?

Have fun tonight - sorry I will not be there,

Hi Bea,

It is the Bird Island Challenge. There is a 3 mile, 6 mile and 14 mile course. The 3 mile is all sheleterd water. Registration closed yesterday but they may take a late entry. You would need to call the Gleason Family YMCA on 508 295 9622. Jo-Ann Watson is running the race and is very helpful. Web site is http://www.ymcasouthcoast.org

I will start to post other races just incase there is interest. I did a 9.5 mile race on Nahant last weekend - really nice course and I managed a 2nd in the FSK class - lost by 3 seconds after 1 hour and 35 minutes of paddling! Really fun day, nice picnic at the end. I even got to try a surfski - uh oh - I liked it - but will stick with the Epic 18x for now. There is a nice flatwater race in Lowell on September 18th - I will post details separately.

Cheers,

Bev.

Tomorrow 8/26 is supposed to see sun again, and it a Skills Night, who's planning to join the fun.

I'm planning to attend with a new paddler from work. Hope to see you tomorrow!

Hope you're not bringing the boss to drown him for making you work so much and miss paddling trips.

I won't be there this week - on-call for work - don't have a waterproof wi-fi laptop. :(

See you there !

Bringing a new fish :), a former rec paddler looking to make her way out onto the sea!

Pat would you be willing to let her test drive your Tempest? On Sat, she's looking to buy either a WS Tempest 170 or an Explorer that she saw listed.

Cheers!

Jordan, if your friend is looking for a new boat, EMS has new Tempest 170s in red for around $1150, good deal on a new plastic boat...

My Avocet is also on the market (haven't posted it yet). Excellent boat for $600, if you think it would be a good fit for her. So she has options!

Anybody up for a change to the Thursday night skills session? Looks like it is a full moon and low tide this week. Would this be good timing for a sunset / moonrise /end of summer trip to the spit? Would anybody be interested in doing that instead of going to Hanson this week? Maybe a skill session of riding little waves? Weather seems fairly reasonable but with some cloudiness.

Just floating an idea out there. Shoot me down if you wish.... :)

Norm, I do believe this idea was floated a while back on the "Night Paddle" thread:

Mark wrote:The Full Moon at the Sandspit paddles always include a night paddle portion of the trip, and under a full moon! (And usually no boat traffic either, because it is low tide.)

Next month, the full moon is on the Autumnal Equinox, and on a Thursday!

Low tide is 6:40 PM, sunset is 6:40 PM and moonrise is 6:25 PM!

Pray for good weather!

I would be interested, but I can't get home from work in time to do this.

So I guess nobody (that is available) was interested in going to the spit tonight for the sunset/moonrise.

Is anyone going to Hanson tonight?

Others have tried before you, Norm. Pity, because pond skills - as you found out at Scituate - do not necessarily translate to ocean skills.

(wish I could get there in time....)

Must be something in the air - I have been chained to my desk as well. Did mamage an Isle of Shoals trip last Thursday - big seas coming home - up to 8' - more than just a little texture! Raced last Sunday in Lawrence, very nice course.

Hope to make the next one!

Cheers, Bev.

I've come to the conclusion that everyone who has a job is working too hard! And it's impossible to complain about it because so many are still out of work.

I ended up getting out on the water tonight with Lora. We got to do the night paddle that Pat was talking about a while ago. We did the sunset moonrise thing, but not at the spit. The sunset was not very spectacular and the moon rose behind clouds but eventually came out.

Better put your helmets on then as I'm heading to West Fest tomorrow and with any luck will be doing multiple runs on both the Upper and Lower sections :P

Going to hike up to the tippy top? Pretty exciting up there, but a long slog. You will have a lot of fun on the West. The most continuous river I've paddled, not a flat spot to be found. For me, two runs has felt like not enough, and three has been exhausting. Suggestion: stop at 2!

And take photos...

Thanks Kate, I'm not yet actually sure where exactly we will be putting in yet (hopefully not too far from where the shuttle drops us). My current game plan is to get there early to scout and enjoy the Upper section where the spectators hang and then run the Upper (if I manage to make the right connections), then do the lower, then have one more shot at the Upper where by this time I should know where to stop (hopefully) and play. Sound too aggressive or just about right?

I've been told that I will likely miss all the good spots on the Upper on my first run so now I'm trying to squeeze in two ;) And where as I've never been there, I've also been advised not to miss out on what the lower portion has to offer either. So much to do in one day.

I'll be sure to bring my camera - thanks for the reminder :)

I haven't run the Lower, only the Upper - both from the shuttle drop-off and hiking to the top (I suggest you not bother with this for the first year). It may be that you'll zip past a lot of what the Upper has to offer - as I said, it's very continuous - but then again maybe not. Where to stop = wherever you can manage to locate and hit an eddy.

Might be a bit ambitious to include a run of the Lower.... but you can always scrap the final Upper run until another year.
