Duxbury - Powder Point to Gurnet Light - 6/9/12 - 9:00am

Post by norm »

I just got the ok to go out for a paddle mid-day Saturday even though I am on-call for work, so that is why I am posting this so late. I know there are a few people interested in paddling tomorrow and want to stay fairly local, so I sent out an email to all the paddlers in my address book to propose a trip and confirm that there is some interest before posting. (I don't want to go out alone.)

Here is what I propose: How about keeping it simple and launching at Powder Point Bridge in Duxbury at 9:00am? I know the tide is low at 10:23, but it's possible to launch at the bridge at any tide. We could head out to Gurnet Light as a target destination and maybe go around to the ocean side of Duxbury Beach if it's nice out there and people are feeling up to it. This could be a long paddle of 14 to 18 miles depending on the conditions and how far people want to go. It could also be shortened to an 8 to 12 mile paddle for a subset of the group if anyone wants to just hang out on a beach for a few hours while the rest of the group goes further off-shore. From the 4 mile to 6 mile mark of the paddle is the Saquish Neck beaches and I think it is ok to stop there without hassle - people could stop there and be picked up on the way back.

Here is a Google Earth view of the proposed track of the trip.

Wet exit/Rescue skills are required.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat with spray skirt and front and back bulkheads.
Ability to paddle 10 to 18 miles.
Bring a lunch for a stop or two on a beach somewhere.
The water is still a little cold when you get offshore - proper clothing for cool water temps recommended.

So far I have responses from JimC, Wildwoman and Aquaholic that they plan to attend.

Anyone else, please respond if you plan to attend.

Sounds great. Have paddled much around that area, but not starting from Duxbury. Should be a great day - count me in.
